TO-39 metal package integrates the infrared induction thermopile detector chip MLX81101 (the temperature is measured by PTC or PTAT) and the signal processing dedicated integrated chip MLX90302 for processing the output signal of infrared sensor. The optical filter with wavelength passband of 5.5 to 14 m, is used for blocking visible and near-infrared radiation (propagating long-length waves) integrated in the package to provide immunity to ambient and sunlight. The thermometer features high-precision and resolution thanks to the integrated low noise amplifier, 17-bit analog-to-digital converter and powerful digital signal processing chip MLX90302. An additional on-chip temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the chip. The corresponding ambient and object temperatures are calculated after measuring the outputs. The two tempratures with 0.01C resolution are stored in RAM of MLX90302 and output via two-wire SMBus (system management bus) for protocol interface (compatible with IIC) (0.02C resolution) or 10-bit PWM (pulse width modulation) mode. The temperature range of MLX90614 has been calibrated, and the detacted temperature is the average of all objects in the view sight. 2. Working Principle MLX90614 is factory default output mode SMBus, and PWM is not enabled. The SCL pin needs to be kept a high level when powering on to use PWM. If PWM is enabled, you need to shift to SMBus and reconfigure the PWM/SDA pin before starting SMBus communication. The SCL pin needs to be held a low level for more than the request time (tREQ) gt;1,44ms, and the data on the SDA line is ignored. If the PWM is not enbled, it must be enabled by cutting-on power or exiting sleep mode. If PWM is not enabled through EEPROM, the PWM/SDA pin will take over SMBus communication directly after POR without sending a request. The way to enter SMBus mode from PWM or is the same as from thermal relay. MLX90614-SMBus Connection After the EEPROM is configured as PWM an power on to reset, the PWM mode is free-running. PWM can be configured as open-drain NMOS (a pull-up resistor is required) or push-pull output. The MLX90614 is able to run in EEPROM for thermal relay operation. PWM/SDA pin can be configured as push-pull or open-drain NMOS and capable to trigger an internal device, such as relay, buzzer, RF transmitter and LED. This simple thermostat can be implemented without any MCU and additional expense of developing firmware. This function can be applied in a alarm system to wake up the MCU.
