Summary
This volume contains three hitherto unpublished essays by Karl Mannheim, written before his teaching career in Germany was cut short by Hitler's coming to power.
The essays deal with problems central to the "sociology of knowledge", the discipline founded by Mannheim upon which his fame rests. In the first, he discusses two alternative approaches to the sociological study of the cultural process—one based upon a sociological interpretation of concrete historical phenomena, and another aiming at ascertaining timeless laws and regularities inherent in the development of society and culture. The second essay takes up in detail a question particularly relevant to Mannheim's concept of the sociology of knowledge; the emergence of the intelligentsia as a social stratum. In the third essay, the author explores the effect of levelling and democratization upon intellectual, artistic and spiritual creativity in our contemporary culture. Mannheim rejects the pessimistic notion that the creative mind cannot thrive in a mass democracy. He shows, instead, that democratization involves, not only the real danger of a levelling down, but also the alternative of growth towards a higher spirituality.
