Not only do speaker spikes stabilise the speaker in the placement, it distributes the weight of the speaker in an even, downward-pressure manner. They allow the speaker to sit firmly but reducing the surface area of the bottom speaker cabinet in contact with the surface it rests on, and this comes the crucial effect the spikes act; the resonance and vibration from within speaker cone out to the cabinet are not carried through to the table top. If they do, bass are often muddy and mid-bass will suffer resulting in a duller vocals.
