Samurai 17oz “Uguisu” Olive Left Hand Twill Selvage Jeans

Here it is a special selvage denim from Samurai Jeans, Uguisu Denim. Uguisu is a small, green bird commonly called a nightingale. The Uguisu signals the beginning of spring and brings to mind images of green, the fresh spring leaves and the color of the bird itself.

This color has a long history in Japan, starting in the Edo Period (1600~), but really becoming a popular color in the late Meiji period (1900~). After analyzing old, dead stock army pants and dissecting the dyeing technique, they combine those with a special slub yarn and you’ve got 17oz of awesomeness. This 17oz is a Left Hand Twill selvage denim, meaning it has a softer feel while retaining the texture and characters normally shown in Samurai Jeans.

In the ancient Japanese card game called “Hanafuda”, the Uguisu is depicted in the plum tree, the concept which Samurai use in designing the ‘plum’ button fly.
