Indonesia, 15 January 2022 - The Food and Beverage category, which covers a wide range of products including spicy foods, remained one of the top-selling categories on Tokopedia in 2022, revealed Tokopedia's Head of External Communications, Ekhel Chandra Wijaya.
Looking Back at Spicy Food Trends on Tokopedia in 2022
In celebration of International Hot and Spicy Food Day, which falls on 16 January 2023, Tokopedia, through Ekhel, disclosed the sales trends of various food products during 2022 – with spicy snacks being a particular highlight.
1. Top Three Favorite Spicy Foods
According to Tokopedia, the most popular spicy foods among consumers in 2022 were spicy onion crackers, fried meatballs (also known as basreng), and spicy intestine chips.
“Many Indonesians love spicy food. This has inspired various local businesses, particularly MSMEs, to market various spicy food products through one of our platforms, Tokopedia NYAM!,” added Ekhel.
2. Seblak, Ayam Geprek, and Oseng Mercon Enjoy Booming Sales
Other popular spicy foods, such as seblak, saw a nearly 1.5-fold increase in transactions on Tokopedia in 2022 compared to the previous year. "In addition, sales of ayam geprek and oseng mercon also grew by more than 1.5 times and 2 times, respectively," Ekhel added.
3. The Most Popular Sambal Sauces
For some Indonesians, no meal is complete without sambal. Each region's sambal recipes have their own distinct flavor. "Of the various types of sambal, sambal bawang, sambal cumi, and sambal terasi were the most popular types of sambal among Tokopedia consumers during 2022," explained Ekhel.
4. Regions with the Highest Number of Spicy Food Sellers and Buyers
"Jabodetabek, Bandung, Medan, and Surabaya were some of the regions that consume spicy food the most and have the highest number of spicy food sellers on Tokopedia throughout 2022," Ekhel noted.
5. Millennials Love Spicy Food the Most
Most Indonesians of various regions, backgrounds, and generations greatly prefer spicy food. "According to Tokopedia, millennials, or people born between 1981 and 1996, were the generation that most frequently bought the best-selling spicy snacks on Tokopedia in 2022," concluded Ekhel.
